Friendly Hands Food Bank, Inc.
Helping Our Local Families with Care and Concern Since 1991
Friendly Hands Food Bank, Inc. began its non-profit work for the community back on February 9, 1991. Under the care and effort of the founder and still serving Executive Director Maureen "Mo" Hubert, the food bank began operating out of her own home. With only a few volunteers to assist at its inception, the food bank was only able to help a handful of families. Thankfully, their tireless effort was not wasted, and our facility began to expand and draw upon the help and good spirits of many more volunteers.
In the year 2000 the organization obtained its own designated space at 50 King Street, where it now operates year-round to take in and distribute food, coats, hats, scarfs, gloves and other goods. Along with holiday drives for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we also work to provide local students with supplies at the start of the school year, as well as medical supplies for our seniors.
Today, we serve 300 families each year in Torrington and surrounding areas. We serve families from many walks of life, some of which have been unable to receive help from other local agencies.
Without volunteer efforts, funding and grants, however, the food bank would not be able to continue its work. If you are interested in finding out more about helping Friendly Hands in any capacity, please look to the following page on Helping Out.
